What’s new

Signal, the secure messaging app, has introduced a new capability that lets users link more than one phone to a single account. Previously, the service only supported linking computers and iPads as companion devices, but now Android smartphones and iPhones can also be attached.

With the feature, incoming messages can be viewed and replied to from any linked device. Users can also decide whether they want to transfer an end-to-end encrypted copy of their message history to each newly connected device. This option is designed to limit potential risks in cases where a device might be shared, lost, or compromised.

Rollout and interface updates

The rollout has started with Signal 8.20 on Android and version 8.22 on iPhone and iPad. In addition, the company says it has made significant interface improvements for larger screens, with particular attention to foldable phones. These changes also made it possible to add support for Android tablets. However, Signal notes that the large-screen version of the Android app is still a work in progress. The team is also working on optimizing the interface for the Chromebook app.
