Sigulda Gymnasium Student Wins Bronze at International Biology Olympiad

Evita Mārtinsone, a student at Sigulda State Gymnasium, has secured a bronze medal at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026. The competition took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, from July 12 to 19. It featured 302 high school participants from 78 countries, who took four practical and two theoretical exams. The theoretical part covered cell biology, plant and animal anatomy and physiology, genetics, ecology, ethology, and systematics. The practical exams included molecular biology, biochemistry, animal physiology, morphology, systematics, and bioinformatics. Evita completed her secondary education with an average grade of 9.65, having studied in a medical and health-oriented program. She plans to pursue a career in biotechnology and bioengineering. Overall, the Latvian team earned one silver and three bronze medals at the Olympiad.
