Over a week ago, the Sigulda municipality caused public controversy by changing its initial stance adopted at the start of the war. Previously, the local government had decided not to fund its athletes if they competed in events that included participants from Russia and Belarus. However, the council has now reversed this restriction.

In its new decision, the municipality references recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the guiding principles of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK). Both organizations advise against boycotting such competitions, and Sigulda chose to follow these guidelines rather than maintain its previous policy.

This means that athletes from Sigulda can again receive municipal funding for participation in international competitions, even if Russian or Belarusian athletes are also competing. The decision has sparked debate within the community, as some residents believe a firm stance against aggressor states should be upheld.
