On Saturday, July 4, Daugavpils defeated Liepaja 3-1 at home in a Tonybet Latvian Virslīga match. The home side's victory was powered by a hat-trick from Mamadu Silla, who opened the scoring in the 41st minute. After a pass from Abdula Traoré, Silla dribbled past Amilkara Silva on the edge of the penalty area and struck the ball into the bottom right corner, with the ball deflecting off Kirill Ilyin's leg.
Silla struck again early in the second half. In the 51st minute, he rose to head a cross from Džoela Jakubu into the top right corner. He completed his hat-trick in the 56th minute, again heading home a cross from the left, this time supplied by Ziad M'Handa, past the goalkeeper into the same top corner.
Liepaja pulled one back in the first minute of stoppage time through Dzibril Geje, who scored from close range after a rebound. However, it was not enough to salvage a result.
Before this match, Daugavpils had won only one of their previous six games (against Grobiņa 1-0) and drawn four. Liepaja, after three consecutive losses, had bounced back with a 4-0 thrashing of Ogre United. Their previous encounters saw Daugavpils win the first 3-0 and Liepaja take the second 2-1.
With this win, Daugavpils moved to 27 points from 22 games, sitting sixth, while Liepaja remain on 28 points in fifth place. At the top of the table, Riga and RFS both have 55 points, with Riga having played one more match. The championship is played in four rounds of 36 matchdays, with the final round scheduled for November 8.
