Sillamäe reconstructs dam on Sõtke river
Sillamäe is reconstructing a dam on the Sõtke river on Veski Street, with work expected to finish in November. The project costs over 898,000 euros, making it the city's largest municipally funded investment project this year.
The Estonian city of Sillamäe is carrying out reconstruction of a dam on the Sõtke river, located on Veski Street. The work is being carried out by general contractor Nordpont, with completion planned for November.
The project is valued at more than 898,000 euros, making it Sillamäe's largest investment project this year funded from the city's own budget, according to the outlet "Sillamäe Vestnik".
Role of the dam
The dam was built in 1950 and forms part of a system of three dams and three reservoirs that regulates the river's flow and supplies water to industrial enterprises. Water in the area of the dam being reconstructed is used, among other things, for the needs of the Silpower thermal power plant. The structure also protects the coastal area, home to a seaside promenade, from flooding.
Planned works
The reconstruction plans include reinforcing concrete structures, clearing the riverbed, repairing the road bridge and installing modern water-discharge equipment. A pedestrian sidewalk with railings will also be built on the bridge.
According to Vladimir Sokushev, head of the city's construction and land management department, the work is proceeding on schedule.
Rus.ERR first reported plans to repair the dam, which had been in disrepair, on the Sõtke river back in February this year.
