Containers for Reusable Items Installed in Sillamäe
Three containers have been placed in Sillamäe for collecting clean, usable clothing, shoes, and household textiles, which will be sorted and given to people in need.
The city of Sillamäe, Estonia, has set up three containers for the collection of clothes, shoes, and household textiles that are suitable for reuse. This initiative prepares for the upcoming requirement starting January 2025, when local governments must provide separate collection for textiles.
The city partnered with the non-profit organization MTÜ Riidepunkt, which installed and maintains the containers at no cost to the municipality. Vice Mayor Aleksei Stepanov noted that after two weeks, the containers are filling steadily. Over the next year, usage will be evaluated, and additional containers may be added if needed.
Residents are asked to place only clean, undamaged clothing, footwear, toys, and household textiles into the containers. All items must be sealed in closed bags to prevent soiling and keep sets together. Environmental specialist Jaan Metsis advised against leaving bags next to a full container, as they could be damaged by rain or snow. Instead, people should call the phone number listed on the container to arrange collection.
The containers are emptied weekly. If one fills up before the scheduled pickup, residents should contact the provided number. After sorting, the reusable items will be distributed to individuals facing difficult life circumstances.
