The Pittsburgh Penguins lost 3-2 in a shootout away to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a regular-season game of the National Hockey League (NHL), the top professional ice hockey league in North America. Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs, who plays for Pittsburgh, remained on the bench as a backup. After winning their first two games of the season, the Penguins have now lost three in a row.

Pittsburgh vs Columbus

Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh, with Malkin tying the game at 2-2 in the third period. Goaltender Sergei Murashov stopped 43 of 45 shots, but in the shootout Columbus's Kent Johnson was the only player to score.

Columbus outshot Pittsburgh 45-22, won 66.7% of faceoffs and had more power plays (21-9). Damon Severson scored a goal and added an assist. Goaltender Cam Talbot made 20 saves and stopped all three Pittsburgh shootout attempts. He became the first goaltender in NHL history to win with nine different clubs, and at 39 years and 96 days old he is also the oldest goaltender to win a game for the Blue Jackets.

Seattle vs Detroit

The Seattle Kraken beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 on the road, scoring four goals in the second period. Detroit still led 2-1 in that period, but Seattle scored three goals on its next four shots. Frederick Gaudreau scored twice, Ben Meyers had a goal and two assists, and Philipp Grubauer stopped 38 shots.

The Kraken have scored six goals in a game for the third time this season, and their 21 goals through the first five games are a new club record. Detroit's first NHL goals came from William Wallinder and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård. Near the end of the game, home fans increasingly called for the club to be sold.

Anaheim vs Winnipeg

The Anaheim Ducks beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-1, with five different players scoring. Judd Caulfield, Tim Washe and Sam Colangelo made it 3-0, and after a reply from Kyle Connor, Mikael Granlund and Nikita Nesterenko, who scored into an empty net, extended the lead.

Beckett Sennecke added two assists and extended his season-opening point streak to four games. Connor scored the 329th goal of his career in his 700th NHL game.
