Forecasters warn: Latvia's first autumn storm to hit on Friday

Latvian meteorologists report that Friday, October 9, will bring the first significant storm of this autumn. According to the latest forecasts, wind strength will increase considerably during Friday morning and throughout the day.

Southwesterly winds are expected to produce gusts ranging from 16 to 21 meters per second, while coastal areas could see gusts reaching up to 28 meters per second. Wind activity is forecast to ease during the night heading into Saturday.

Less damage expected than in August

Although the storm is shaping up to be powerful, forecasters estimate the resulting damage will be considerably smaller than what occurred at the end of August. On the night between August 22 and 23, Latvia was struck by the strongest summer storm in the history of weather observations, which caused substantial damage.

Warmth before the shift

Before the stormy Friday, calmer conditions are expected — Wednesday and Thursday will be mostly dry and sunny, with light to moderate winds. Temperatures on Thursday could climb as high as +20 degrees Celsius.

However, conditions will shift sharply by Friday — daytime temperatures will drop below +10 degrees in many areas, with rain expected at times.
