Forecasters say the first snow is not yet expected in Latvia in mid-October.
In recent years, the first snowflakes in parts of the country, usually in Vidzeme and Latgale, have most often been seen in October. Last year, the first snow was reported on 12 October in the Balvi municipality, while in 2023 snow fell in many places across Latvia as early as 8 October. In some years, the first snow came only in November.
Cyclone and wind
After a sunny and warm Thursday, a cyclone will approach the country this week. On Friday it will rain at times, it will turn cooler and the wind will strengthen considerably. On the coast, southwest and west wind gusts may reach 28 metres per second. The wind will ease overnight into Saturday.
Weekend and next week
Over the weekend, rain will fall from time to time. Night temperatures will range from +4 to +12 degrees, while daytime highs will reach +9 to +15 degrees. Similar temperatures will remain next week, with occasional rain.
Longer-term outlook
According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, air temperatures in Latvia in the second half of October will be about two degrees above normal. In November, they could fall to normal levels. December is forecast to be warm and rainy, while January and February are expected to be cooler and snowier.
