Ukraine’s military chief Syrsky rejects conflict with ousted defense minister

Days after the dismissal of Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov sparked nationwide protests, military chief Oleksandr Syrsky broke his silence to address criticism. Fedorov attributed his removal to a conflict with Syrsky, prompting public backlash and rumors that Syrsky might resign.

In a column published in Ukrainian military outlet Militarnyi on July 20, 2026, Syrsky explained that while he is at war and disinterested in interviews or columns, his silence had been misinterpreted as agreement. He dismissed claims that he lacks a victory strategy, arguing that revealing such a plan would hand it to the enemy. Responding to accusations of resisting drone warfare, Syrsky noted that he established the Unmanned Systems Forces as a separate military branch.

Syrsky also rejected allegations of favoritism, stating that the army's most popular commanders rose from junior ranks under his leadership. He emphasized that he, like the rest of the country, awaits military reform and does not support diverting soldiers' pay to purchase drones. He denied any conflict with the Defense Ministry, claiming he was unaware of any disagreement with Fedorov and believed they had a normal working relationship.

Apologizing if he caused offense, Syrsky called for setting aside personal matters and focusing on the ultimate goal—victory. He expressed confidence that Ukraine will endure if everyone fulfills their role.
