Syrskyi: Russia Has Not Abandoned Plans for Buffer Zone in Northern Ukraine

Ukraine's top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced on Facebook that the Russian army has not given up on its goals of capturing additional Ukrainian territory and establishing a so-called buffer zone in the country's north. This statement comes despite significant losses suffered by the occupiers in recent fighting.

Syrskyi noted that in the first half of 2026, Ukrainian forces began work on multi-layered engineering fortifications, developing anti-drone defenses, and preparing populated areas for protection. These measures are crucial for limiting the enemy's offensive capabilities and saving the lives of Ukrainian defenders.

Occupier Activities and Border Fortifications

According to the commander, Russian forces are continuing to ramp up weapons production, preparing for future offensive operations, seeking weak points in Ukrainian defenses, and attempting to penetrate new areas. Under these circumstances, fortifications, engineering obstacles, and anti-drone defenses become a key factor in reducing the attacker's advantage.

The Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reports that in northern Ukraine, especially along the border with Belarus, multi-layered defensive fortifications are being reinforced. This is done to prevent any sudden enemy actions along potential attack routes. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting the country's territory from new incursions.
