Sydalinna Theatre to premiere Johan Elm's production "The Last Knight"

On October 2, Sydalinna Theatre will present the premiere of director Johan Elm's production "The Last Knight" — a story about a man who devoted his entire life to duty and is suddenly given the chance to look at that life from the outside.

The production is based on the play "Kõrberebase elu" ("Life of the Desert Fox"), written in 2006 by renowned Estonian playwright Jaan Kruusvall. It was his final play and has never before been staged. Twenty years after it was written, this philosophically dense text is finally coming to life on stage.

A General looking back at his own life

At the center of the story is the General, played by Elmo Nüganen. He has spent his whole life serving duty and lofty ideals, but in following his chosen path he failed to notice how far he had drifted from those closest to him. Now the General is given the chance to view his life from the outside and see it in an entirely different light.

According to director Johan Elm, one of the production's central themes is a person's journey toward self-understanding. He noted that at some point everyone asks what their life has been worth, yet most people never confront such questions as directly as the General does — and it is precisely this existential journey that Elm wanted to depict on stage in all its shades.

Elm also said that casting Nüganen in the lead role feels like a gift to him personally, since Nüganen is not only one of Estonia's leading directors but also his own teacher. While reading the play, Elm happened to hear an interview in which Nüganen spoke about love, and it struck him how closely the actor's own experience echoed the existential trials faced by the General.

While Kruusvall's original play ends rather pessimistically, Elm sought a way to leave the audience with hope. His directorial concept makes the ending less definitive, suggesting that love can be a force powerful enough to change a person — a thread that runs through and ties together the General's entire story.

The cast includes Elmo Nüganen, Jelena Tarasenko, Erika Babjak, Dmitri Kosjakov, Karin Lamson, Artjom Veselovski and Mihhail Manevitš. The play is performed in Russian with simultaneous translation into Estonian.
