Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni emotionally left a press conference after losing the World Cup final to Spain (0-1), apologizing and saying it was 'too hard' as he faced questions about his future.
Lionel Scaloni, who had the chance to become only the second coach in history to win back-to-back World Cups, suffered a heartbreaking 0-1 defeat to Spain in the final.
Several Argentine players were in tears after the match, and the 48-year-old coach was equally emotional. During the press conference, he was asked about his future with the national team, as his contract runs until December.
"I will talk to the federation president," Scaloni said. "I have an idea of what I want to do. I will fulfill my contract, but I don't know if I can achieve anything big. We need to discuss it." He expressed gratitude to the president for the opportunity to be in this "dream place" and emphasized that the team gave everything until the last minute.
Scaloni became increasingly emotional and asked the media for understanding. "We are in a wonderful place, a dream place. We never imagined we would get here," he said. "To continue, we need to do many things – restart our minds and build a new team. It is very difficult to do that again."
Shortly after these words, he stood up and left the room, apologizing: "It's too hard, I'm very sorry." He did not stay until the end of the press conference, leaving journalists and fans stunned.
