Thai police said on Friday that seven people, including the suspected attacker, were killed and 15 others wounded in a shooting at a school near Bangkok, marking the country's worst mass shooting since 2022.

Authorities confirmed the suspect, a student at the school, had killed his grandparents before carrying out the attack.

What happened

The shooting occurred at the prestigious Debsirin Nonthaburi school in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province. Arsit Sampantharat, permanent secretary of the interior ministry, told broadcaster PPTV that the suspected shooter remained inside the school after reports of the attack first emerged.

Images from the scene roughly an hour after the shooting showed people gathered outside the school comforting one another, while police and emergency responders worked inside the building. The area appeared to have been secured, though officials had not publicly confirmed the shooter's status at that point.

A witness said students hid in a classroom after hearing gunshots coming from another building, until police officers knocked on the door and safely escorted them out.

About the school

The school had roughly 3,100 students and 147 teachers in the 2025 academic year, according to district authorities. It is part of the Debsirin network, founded by the Thai royal family, whose alumni include former prime ministers, scholars and writers.
