Scottie Scheffler wins second FedEx Cup, overtakes Tiger Woods in career earnings

A commanding final round

Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship on Sunday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Trailing by three strokes heading into the final round, the American shot a 4-under 66 to storm past the field and finish the tournament at 16-under overall. Runner-up Viktor Hovland of Norway lost his overnight three-shot lead after three bogeys and closed with a 72, finishing three strokes behind Scheffler.

Second FedEx Cup title and a new record

The Tour Championship win also secured Scheffler the FedEx Cup playoff title for the second time in his career. He becomes only the third player, after Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, to win the FedEx Cup more than once. The victory came with a $10 million bonus, pushing Scheffler's career PGA Tour earnings to $130,390,661 — a total that makes him the PGA Tour's all-time leading money winner, surpassing Tiger Woods' previous record.

It was Scheffler's third PGA Tour title of the season and his second win in three weeks, following his earlier victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. According to several US sports outlets, Scheffler had to work through a midseason form dip and health issues this year before closing the season on a high note as the world's top-ranked player.

Praise from Tiger Woods

Following the win, golf legend Tiger Woods publicly congratulated Scheffler on social media, calling his performance "incredible" and praising what has been a standout season overall. Scheffler himself has suggested that part of what makes him successful is his ability to rein in his emotions and stay focused — something he says he is always consciously working on.
