Skrīveri Dendrological Park replants trees grown from its own seeds in Kalsnava
An autumn festival marking the 135th anniversary of Skrīveri Dendrological Park included the planting of young trees grown in Kalsnava from seeds originally collected in the park. The event was organized by park manager Latvijas valsts meži (LVM).
Skrīveri Dendrological Park held an autumn festival on September 19 to mark its 135th anniversary. Organized by park manager AS Latvijas valsts meži (LVM), the event featured walks, educational activities and a market for local producers, but also included something more lasting: the renewal of the park's historic plantings.
Early in the day, visitors were invited to take part in a tree-planting effort aimed at restoring the historic park's greenery. Some of the young trees planted have a special connection to the site — they grew from seeds that had originally been collected in the Skrīveri park itself.
Seeds that traveled to Kalsnava
The story is linked to the LVM arboretum in Kalsnava, where decades ago seeds gathered in Skrīveri were used to grow new trees. Some of those trees have now returned to the place where their predecessors once grew. According to arboretum specialist Liene Opincāne, the process resembles grandchildren returning to their grandparents: the seeds were once collected in the Skrīveri park, grew into trees at Kalsnava, and are now being brought back to their place of origin.
Skrīveri Dendrological Park is one of Latvia's oldest and most significant dendrological collections, managed by state forestry company Latvijas valsts meži.
