Famous Referee Taylor Retires After More Than 800 Matches

The 47-year-old Premier League referee, who officiated over 800 games including two World Cups, has announced his retirement.

PGMOL announced that one of the most famous referees, 47-year-old Taylor, is ending his career. In a statement, Taylor said that officiating at the highest level has been a huge privilege, but the pressure and attention are immense, and now is the right time to start a new career chapter.

Over his career, Taylor officiated 831 matches, including in the English Premier League, European competitions, and international football. He oversaw two World Cups (2022 and 2026). His last game as a referee was the 2026 World Cup quarterfinal between Spain and Portugal, where the champions won 1-0; Taylor showed three yellow cards.

In the Premier League, Taylor refereed 432 matches. He made his Premier League debut in 2010 in a match between Fulham and Portsmouth. His record is 14 yellow cards in a single Premier League game. In total, he officiated 163 international matches.
