Slaven Bilić returns as Croatia head coach after 14-year gap
Slaven Bilić has been appointed as the new head coach of the Croatia national football team, replacing Zlatko Dalić who resigned earlier this week.

Slaven Bilić has been named the head coach of the Croatia men's national football team, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) announced on Monday. The decision followed a proposal by HNS president Marijan Kustić and was unanimously approved by the HNS board.
Bilić returns to the helm of the national team after a 14-year break, taking over from Zlatko Dalić, who resigned on Wednesday. Dalić was Croatia's most successful coach, leading the team to the 2018 World Cup final, the 2022 World Cup semifinals, and the round of 16 at Euro 2020. This year, Croatia failed to advance beyond the first knockout round of the World Cup, losing 1-2 to Portugal.
Bilić previously coached Croatia from 2006 to 2012. During that period, the team played 65 matches, winning 42, drawing 15, and losing eight. His best achievement was reaching the quarterfinals of Euro 2008, where Croatia lost to Turkey on penalties.
The 57-year-old former defender earned 44 caps for Croatia. He has coached several clubs, including West Ham United in the mid-1990s. His most recent coaching role was with Saudi Arabian club Al-Fateh in the 2023/24 season.
"I am fully aware of the great expectations after Dalić's remarkable era, but anyone who coaches Croatia must be ready for that," Bilić said. "I have great faith in the players at our disposal, and my task is to bring energy, ambition, and determination to ensure Croatia maintains its place in football's elite."
Kustić expressed confidence in Bilić, highlighting his experience as both a player and a coach.
