Slovenia named among the best destinations for older travellers in new study
In a study by travel company Firebird Tours comparing 100 countries, Slovenia ranked fourth as a destination for travellers aged 65 and over. Japan took first place.

Slovenia, a small European country, has been ranked fourth in a new study by the travel specialist company Firebird Tours on the best destinations for older travellers. Foreign media, citing Travel + Leisure magazine, reported the findings. The result suggests that destinations suitable for seniors are not limited to traditionally popular European holiday countries such as Italy or Spain. Japan took first place overall.
What the study assessed
The study analysed 100 countries using seven criteria that can matter particularly to travellers aged 65 and over. It looked at safety, access to healthcare, how easy it is to get around on foot, senior discounts at museums and on public transport, cultural experiences, and the share of older residents in the country's population.
Unlike studies comparing countries to move to in retirement, this one focused on where seniors might feel comfortable as visitors.
Why consider Slovenia
Slovenia is a relatively small country where several kinds of travel experience can be combined: mountain scenery, lakes, historic towns and a coastline. This allows visitors to choose between relaxed holidays and exploring culture and nature.
For seniors who do not want long transfers or a rush from one sight to the next, the option of travelling at a calm pace can matter. Safety, available healthcare and easy mobility may also help travellers feel more confident abroad.
A high ranking does not mean Slovenia is the best choice for everyone, however. Before travelling, it is worth checking transport options in the specific region, accommodation availability and how easy it is to reach planned sights. Destinations are best chosen according to personal interests, health, mobility and budget.
