In Smiltene, a senior helps a first-grader left alone waiting for a bus in the rain

On September 4, a resident of Smiltene noticed a small boy, apparently a first-grader, standing alone at a public transport stop near Smiltene Secondary School for a lengthy period. The episode was reported by the portal Ziemeļlatvija.lv.

The woman, waiting in her car for a neighbor's child, saw the boy shifting nervously in the rain for what seemed like twenty to thirty minutes. Approaching him, she learned he was waiting for a bus home, but according to the schedule, that bus wasn't due until mid-afternoon, while the encounter took place around midday. The boy explained that his teacher had told him to go outside and wait for the bus.

Since the stop had no shelter at the time — the municipality has promised to install a covered structure only after several months — and cars from both locals and outside visitors passed by regularly, the woman grew concerned for the child's safety. Another mother, who had arrived to pick up her own child, then took the boy back to the school.

Cause of the mix-up

After contacting the school, the outlet learned that upon returning, the boy calmly waited in his classroom for his bus, which departs from the school at 2:15 p.m. The deputy head teacher explained that on the first days of the school year — September 2 and 3 — the school bus had run on a different, shortened schedule, but by September 4 it had reverted to its usual timing. The boy's mother apparently was unaware of this change and texted the teacher to send him outside to wait for transport. The teacher complied without checking the time.

The incident serves as a reminder for teachers and parents to carefully coordinate the dismissal of young pupils with actual bus schedules to ensure children's safe journeys home.
