Person Found After Long Search in Forest in Smiltene Region

Rescuers in Smiltene region found and carried out a lost person from the forest after six hours of searching, while in Riga they extinguished a fire caused by unattended cooking.

On Saturday, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received a call in Ape Parish, Smiltene region, where a person had gotten lost in the forest. Rescuers used an ATV and an unmanned aerial vehicle during the search. Sound signals from a firefighting tanker were used to indicate the direction out of the forest. The person was found 1.5 kilometers from the point where they entered the forest. Rescuers carried the person out and handed them over to the Emergency Medical Service. VUGD operations at the scene concluded at 8:37 PM.

Also on Saturday at 12:01 PM, a call was received on Brīvības Gatve in Riga, where unattended cooking had caught fire in a third-floor apartment of a five-story residential building. One person was rescued from the smoke-filled apartment. The fire was extinguished by 12:32 PM.

Over the past 24 hours, VUGD received 46 calls: eight for firefighting, 27 for rescue operations, and 11 were false alarms.
