Local Patriotism Flourishes at Smiltene City Festival
Smiltene's recent city festival saw high resident involvement in organizing and celebrating, reflecting a growing sense of local patriotism in the region.
The recently held Smiltene city festival stood out for its strong community participation. The event opened with a group bike ride from Tepera promenade to Jāņukalna stage, drawing hundreds of participants from children to seniors, many with decorated bicycles and costumes.
A concert by local music groups at Jāņukalna stage attracted thousands of attendees. The auto and moto gathering at the “Žāpurs” garage complex was also highly popular. Young people organized the “Mini lēciens” event at the art school yard, showcasing their dedication.
A rise in local patriotism is evident across several communities. Towns like Ape, Rauna, Bilska, and Silva already host communal celebrations. In August, Blome will hold its first-ever village festival initiated by residents, while Grundzāle plans a parish festival under the motto “I love Grundzāle.” In Variņi, activists have erected a giant umbrella shelter in the town center.
This sense of togetherness helps people face challenging times, including geopolitical uncertainty, depopulation, and rising living costs. Strength is sought not only in family but also in local community and identity.
