Ahead of the first round of the NHL draft in Buffalo, several significant trades took place. One of the biggest involved Pavel Dorofeyev moving from the Vegas Golden Knights to the New York Rangers. The 25-year-old forward, who was Vegas's top goal scorer over the past two seasons, was traded for the 26th and 92nd picks in this year's draft, as well as the Rangers' 2028 first-round pick, which is protected in the top ten.

Immediately after the trade, Dorofeyev agreed to a seven-year contract with the New York club worth $77 million, or $11 million per season. In the regular season last year, he scored 37 goals and added 27 assists in 82 games, and in the Stanley Cup playoffs, he added 12 goals and 16 points in 22 games. The Rangers, who ranked 23rd in scoring last season, hope the Russian forward will significantly boost their offense.

Other deals

Meanwhile, the Anaheim Ducks, after prolonged speculation, parted ways with 23-year-old center Mason McTavish, trading him to the St. Louis Blues. In return, the California club received the 15th and 29th picks in this year's draft. With the 15th pick, the Ducks drafted forward Nikita Klepov, and later traded the 29th and 117th picks to Vegas for the 28th pick, with which they selected Markus Nordmark. McTavish had 17 goals and 41 points in 75 games last season.

Another notable addition was made by the Boston Bruins, who acquired German forward Peterka from the Utah Mammoth. In exchange, Utah received the 2026 first-round pick (23rd overall) and the Florida Panthers' 2028 first-round pick, which Boston had previously obtained in the Brad Marchand trade. The 24-year-old Peterka scored 25 goals last season, two fewer than the previous year in Buffalo. In his NHL career, he has 92 goals and 197 points in 320 games.

Additionally, the Detroit Red Wings traded one of their top goaltending prospects, Sebastian Cosa, to the Utah Mammoth for the 23rd pick in this year's draft. With the acquired pick, Detroit drafted forward Hurlbert. The 23-year-old Cosa, drafted 15th overall by Detroit in 2021, recorded 26 wins in 38 games for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins last season, with a 2.33 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage.
