Šmits and the Rangers extend their NHL winning streak
Latvian defenseman Alberts Šmits and the New York Rangers beat the Islanders for a fourth straight win. The Toronto Maple Leafs, with Teodors Bļugers, beat the Predators in overtime.

Latvian defenseman Alberts Šmits helped the New York Rangers beat the New York Islanders in a National Hockey League (NHL) game on Tuesday. It was the club's fourth consecutive win, and it is currently the longest winning streak in the league at the start of the season.
The Rangers won 5-2 (1-0, 2-2, 2-0) on home ice. Alexis Lafrenière scored three goals and Oliver Bjorkstrand added two.
Šmits played 15 minutes and 27 seconds. He took a two-minute penalty, blocked one shot, intercepted one pass and gave away the puck once. His plus-minus was +1. After five games, the Rangers lead the Eastern Conference with eight points.
Bļugers' team wins in overtime
Forward Teodors Bļugers and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Nashville Predators. The hosts won 5-4 in overtime (0-2, 3-2, 1-0, 1-0), their second win in four games.
Bļugers played nine minutes and 53 seconds, took one shot on goal, made one hit and won all three faceoffs. His plus-minus was -1.
Early in the second period, the Maple Leafs trailed 0-3 after two goals from Nils Höglander and one from Steven Stamkos. John Tavares then got the first goal back, and William Nylander made it 2-3 on the power play. Stamkos scored Nashville's fourth goal, and Gavin McKenna, this year's first overall draft pick, answered with his first NHL goal.
In the third period, Jake Rosloviks tied it at 4-4. Captain Auston Matthews then scored on the power play with 14 seconds left in overtime to win it. Matthews finished with 1+3, Nylander with 1+2, and McKenna with 1+1 in his first scoring game in the NHL. McKenna was named the game's first star.
After four games, the Maple Leafs have four points and are eighth in the Eastern Conference. They play next on Friday morning Latvian time, away to the Vegas Golden Knights.
