Šmits scores hat-trick as Lekrings overwhelm Lielvārde/Unihoc in final period
Lekrings beat Lielvārde/Unihoc 7:3 away in Latvia's men's floorball top league, with Kevins Šmits scoring a hat-trick that decided the match in the final period.

In Latvia's Elvi men's floorball top league, Lekrings defeated Lielvārde/Unihoc 7:3 on the road, with the decisive goals coming in the final period. The two sides were closely matched through the first two periods — Lekrings led 1:0 after the opening period, and the score was tied 3:3 after the second — before the champions pulled away with four unanswered goals in the third.
The standout performer was Kevins Šmits, who scored all three of his goals — twice assisted by Jorens Malkavs and once by Bruno Beķeris — completing his first hat-trick since returning to his home club. The game was also notable for Malkavs, who recorded his 100th career assist in the top league; this season he has four goals and seven assists, while his career totals stand at 140 goals and 101 assists.
The only goal of the first period came from the visitors following a quick counterattack. The second period produced the most scoring action: after Lekrings extended their lead, the hosts fought back through goals from Jānis Jāzeps Grizāns, scoring his first-ever top-league goal, and Zigmārs Pudenko, before Jānis Plots leveled the score at 3:3 with the period's final shot.
Fatigue appeared to catch up with Lielvārde/Unihoc in the third period, as Olafs Zvīnis and Bruno Beķeris added to Šmits' third goal, while two goals scored just 12 seconds apart in the 57th minute ended any hope of a home comeback.
The loss leaves Lielvārde/Unihoc in eighth place in the standings, despite having a chance to climb as high as fourth with a win. Lekrings, with nine points from five games, hold third place and remain in contention for second.
Several statistical notes stood out from the match: Lielvārde/Unihoc finally converted a classic five-on-four power play — their ninth attempt of the season — leaving their power-play conversion rate at just 11.1%, compared to 38.3% last season. Meanwhile, Edgars Puriņš's nine-game scoring streak ended, though an assist extended his ten-game point streak.
