Šmits on painful loss to Switzerland: risky tactics did not pay off

Latvia's national volleyball team suffered a defeat to Switzerland, and afterward team player Šmits explained what he believes went wrong. According to him, the Latvians deliberately chose an aggressive, high-risk style of play, hoping to unsettle their opponents and force mistakes, but the approach ultimately did not pay off.

Šmits acknowledged that the desire to win as quickly as possible may have led the team to overreach. He explained that playing riskier inevitably brings more unforced errors, but the team knowingly took that path, aware that Switzerland could also produce quality volleyball when given a good reception.

Close sets throughout

In most sets, Latvia managed to stay competitive with Switzerland, and the team convincingly won the third set 25:16. However, Switzerland proved steadier in the closing stages of the other sets. Šmits noted that Latvia repeatedly struggled with serve reception, even though the overall level of play was good, and that the Swiss were able to pull away in the final stretches of sets, a gap Latvia could not close.

The fourth set was particularly painful, as its outcome came down to the very last points. Šmits admitted the team failed to hold on in the decisive moments this time, adding that this is simply the nature of sport.

Despite the loss, the tournament is not yet over for Latvia. The team faces Turkey tomorrow in a match that will determine whether it continues its fight for a spot in the playoff round.
