Snapchat stops rewarding fully AI-generated Spotlight videos
Snapchat has announced it will no longer reward fully AI-generated videos on its Spotlight feature, aiming to prioritize content created by real people. The move is part of a broader industry shift against low-quality AI-generated content.

Snapchat has changed its policy on AI-created videos. Starting Friday, the platform will no longer give rewards to videos made entirely by artificial intelligence. The company says it will adjust its recommendation systems so that only videos made by real people can be promoted in Spotlight.
In its announcement, Snapchat explained the goal: Spotlight should be a place where people come across authentic creativity from humans, because original ideas and personal stories have lasting value. Still, the platform is not banning AI completely. Users can continue to use Snapchat's AI tools to improve or modify their videos.
The move continues Snapchat's push to spotlight human-created content. Back in April, the firm had already said that users would encounter less AI-produced material.
This shift occurs as criticism of low-quality AI content grows. Many tech companies are reacting. For instance, LinkedIn added a 'seems like AI slop' button for users to flag posts. Substack created a method for recognizing AI-written emails. Meta faced backlash over an Instagram feature using AI to edit photos from public accounts and removed it earlier this month. YouTube updated its monetization rules to exclude inauthentic content, including repetitive or template-based videos and AI personas talking about health and finance.
Separately, in the past month Snapchat introduced safeguards for younger users. Those aged 13 to 15 can now share Spotlight posts only with people they follow back, a move to avoid doxxing.
