A post on the social network Threads about knowledge of the state language in Latvia has prompted debate. Its author, Zane, writes that she spent an afternoon and evening in the admissions unit of the Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital in Riga and was surprised by what she saw.

She says some patients did not understand the meaning of the word “uzvārds” (surname) in Latvian. Zane spoke positively about the hospital staff, calling them excellent, but said the situation continues to shock her.

Commenters offer differing views

The post drew responses from other users, with a range of opinions.

One user, signing as Iku, wrote that the new nurses do not know the language in which some people want to be understood. Another, Anele, argued that Russian speakers will have no motivation to learn Latvian as long as Latvians readily switch to Russian.

A user named Lasa said she is ethnically Russian and once helped an elderly woman at a reception desk. Afterwards she asked the woman why she did not understand Latvian and why she had not learned basic words, and received a dismissive reply about the language. Lasa said she was shocked and simply walked away.

Another commenter suggested going abroad, where many immigrants do not speak the local language, and asked what there is to be surprised about. A user named Udris commented that treatment goes very well when patients meet only an empty stare and complete disregard.

The account of the situation comes solely from the post's author; no official comment from the hospital is mentioned in the article.
