Social media posts are again urging a mass attempt to cross the border into Spain's Ceuta enclave, though security officials doubt a repeat of July's scenario. Spain and Morocco have both stepped up border security.
Posts written in Arabic are circulating on social media calling for a new mass attempt to cross the border into Ceuta, Spain's enclave in North Africa. German outlet "Bild" reported this, citing Spanish media.
In the posts, users discuss possible routes and points where the border fortifications may be weaker. August 15 has been mentioned as a specific date for the attempt.
Security services remain skeptical
Spanish security services consider it unlikely that July's large-scale border-crossing attempt will be repeated. At the same time, they do not rule out that the heightened attention on Ceuta could be used as a diversion to prepare an attack or mass border crossing elsewhere.
Experts also warn that such a precise date and location could itself be a sign of a disinformation campaign rather than a genuine plan.
Reinforced security
Spanish police have significantly increased their presence in Ceuta, with around 900 officers currently deployed — roughly three times more than before the previous mass crossing attempt. Morocco has likewise strengthened its own border security.
Migration expert Martin Fieder believes Ceuta is currently being used as a kind of "bait." It remains unclear who exactly is behind the calls to storm the Spanish enclave.
