A discussion on the social network Threads has drawn attention to whether it is appropriate to bring small children or pets to the gym when there is no one to leave them with at home.

Safety concerns

Some participants argue that gyms contain heavy equipment and moving machines, meaning visitors cannot always keep track of their surroundings while training. Several commenters shared experiences of children suddenly running into training areas — in one case a small child nearly collided with a heavy dumbbell, in another a child came close to someone performing barbell squats. In such situations, an athlete may not have enough time to react, since movements with heavy equipment follow a fixed trajectory.

Citing materials from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the discussion notes that gym equipment can pose an injury risk to children, and that young children should not use or be near such equipment without proper supervision.

Differing opinions

Not everyone agrees with an outright ban, however. One woman pointed out that in Sweden it is common for parents to bring children to the gym, stressing that responsibility for the child lies with the parent. Other participants added that the issue is not a child's presence itself, but situations where a child runs around unsupervised or touches equipment while parents or trainers fail to intervene.

Several commenters noted that children's behavior largely depends on age and upbringing, so it would be unfair to automatically view every child at a gym as a disturbance.

Club rules vary

Different gyms have different internal rules. At MyFitness clubs, people under 12 may not be left on the premises unsupervised, while those aged 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult or trainer. Lemon Gym, meanwhile, allows minors aged 14 to 17 to use the club independently with a parent's or guardian's written consent.
