On Saturday, September 12, several social care centres throughout Latvia will for the first time simultaneously open their doors to anyone interested in learning about volunteering opportunities and everyday life at the centres. The news was shared with Delfi by Ketrisa Petkeviča, public relations specialist at the association "Ascendum".

The open days are part of a campaign that grew out of experience gained through the project "Conversations with Seniors". The campaign's goal is to raise awareness of the importance of volunteer work and draw attention to the social isolation faced by elderly people.

A different picture of volunteering

The association notes that volunteering at a care centre often turns out very different from what people initially imagine — behind the expectation of gloom and hardship are residents with their own stories, humour, interests and a desire to talk. Antonija Skopa, chairwoman of Ascendum's board, says volunteers who arrive expecting sadness are instead often met with smiles and dark humour, and end up feeling they receive as much as they give. She describes it as a chance to step away from digital life and daily rush, and simply be present with another person.

The "Conversations with Seniors" project

As part of the project, specially selected and trained volunteers regularly visit social care institutions across the country, spending time with residents, listening to their stories, playing games, cooking together and forming friendships. Such meetings help reduce loneliness and isolation among seniors, while also giving volunteers new experiences, relationships and perspective on different stages of life.

At the September 12 open days, anyone interested will be able to see everyday life at the care centres, meet residents, and learn how to get involved in volunteering. The event is financially supported by the Society Integration Foundation from the Latvian state budget.
