Over 7,400 Illegal Migrants Prevented from Entering Latvia from Belarus This Year
Latvian border guards have prevented 7,405 people from illegally crossing the border from Belarus this year, prompting the government to extend the enhanced border security regime until the end of the year.

According to the State Border Guard, the number of individuals attempting to illegally enter Latvia from Belarus has exceeded 7,400 since the start of the year, with exactly 7,405 prevented from doing so. The government has prolonged the reinforced border security regime in several border areas, including Ludza and its parishes, Krāslava and its parishes, Augšdaugava municipality, Daugavpils, and Kaunata parish in Rēzekne municipality. The decision was made due to the heightened flow of illegal migrants orchestrated by Belarus.
In comparison, last year a total of 12,046 attempts to illegally cross the Belarus–Latvia border were thwarted by border guards, with 31 migrants allowed entry on humanitarian grounds. In 2024, 5,388 attempts were prevented, and 26 individuals were admitted for humanitarian reasons.
