Finland to introduce citizenship test in 2027
Starting March 2, 2027, applicants for Finnish citizenship will need to pass an exam on Finnish society, while those who apply earlier will be exempt.
Finland will introduce a new requirement for citizenship applicants starting March 2, 2027 — a test on knowledge of Finnish society, according to Finnish news service Yle.
The new rule will apply to people who submit their citizenship application after the set date. Those who have already applied before this date will not need to take the exam.
What the exam will cover
The test will assess knowledge of how Finnish society is structured and its core principles. Questions will cover legislation, basic human rights, equality, as well as Finland's history and culture.
The exam will be administered electronically and can be taken in either Finnish or Swedish.
Who is developing the test
The exam content is being developed by the University of Helsinki, which won a competition organized by the Finnish Immigration Service to design the test.
People who have obtained higher education in Finnish or Swedish will be exempt from taking the citizenship exam.
