Finland has officially completed construction of a fence along its border with Russia, creating a physical barrier at the sections most vulnerable to illegal crossing. The fence stands 4.5 meters tall and runs for 200 kilometers along the shared border.

Project history and costs

The Finnish parliament approved the decision to build the fence and its accompanying technical surveillance systems back in 2022. Since then, 356 million euros have been invested in the project. Beyond the construction costs, ongoing expenses will also be required — maintaining the fence and its monitoring systems is expected to cost around one and a half million euros per year.

Officials' assessment

Despite the considerable expense, Finnish officials consider the investment in strengthening the border to have been worthwhile. Authorities emphasize that the new infrastructure will help more effectively control the border and prevent illegal crossings in the years ahead.
