Finland joins France's nuclear deterrence initiative

Finland has announced it will join a nuclear deterrence initiative championed by French President Emmanuel Macron and aimed at European countries.

The initiative comes as a response to Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, as well as to intensifying discussions among European allies about what security guarantees the United States will continue to provide going forward. Macron has for some time been encouraging European nations to consider relying on France's nuclear deterrence capabilities as well, rather than depending solely on the security umbrella provided by the US.

Finland's participation in the programme suggests that the Nordic countries, which have significantly shifted their security policies in recent years, are increasingly weighing various deterrence mechanisms to strengthen regional security.
