Finland's population grows by more than 6,400 since start of year
Finland's population reached 5,659,324 by the end of August, with the entire increase driven by migration since natural population change remains negative.
Statistics Finland released preliminary data on Tuesday, September 22, showing that the country's population reached 5,659,324 people by the end of August this year. Since the start of the year, the population has grown by 6,443 people.
Migration drives growth
The population increase was entirely due to migration. Between January and August, 30,213 people moved to Finland, while 16,570 people left the country. This resulted in a net migration gain of 13,643 people.
Natural change remains negative
Meanwhile, natural population change in Finland continues to be negative. During the first eight months of the year, 32,303 children were born in the country, while 39,465 people died. This means deaths exceeded births by 7,162.
Statistics Finland also noted one notable milestone: the life expectancy of newborn boys reached 80 years for the first time.
