Sony Quarterly Profit Jumps 44% on Spider-Man Film and PlayStation

Japanese tech and entertainment group Sony posted net profit of 449.6 billion yen for the three months to September. The rise was driven by the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day and game sales, even as console sales fell.

Sony, the Japanese technology and entertainment company, reported net profit of 449.6 billion yen (about $2.84 billion) for the July–September quarter. That is 44% more than the 311.4 billion yen ($1.96 billion) booked in the same period last year. The result was driven mainly by its PlayStation gaming division and the performance of a major film release.

Film delivers a boost

A key contributor was Spider-Man: Brand New Day, released in July. It earned $2.52 billion at the global box office, making it the third-highest-grossing film in history. The result lifted the film studio Sony Pictures Entertainment, whose earnings for the quarter were $581 million, against $93 million a year earlier, an increase of 527%.

Console sales decline

Fewer PlayStation 5 consoles were sold: 2.6 million units in the second quarter, compared with 4 million in the same quarter of 2025. At the same time, game sales overall rose in both digital downloads and physical discs. Marvel's Wolverine, a Sony-exclusive title, sold 2.4 million copies; its reported budget was $300 million.

Game sales grew despite a week-long player blackout in August, held in protest at Sony's plan to drop discs entirely.

Next console

Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao said developers of the next-generation PlayStation console are making "solid progress" and that work is "progressing as scheduled".
