Sony WF-1000XM6 vs WF-1000XM5: What's the difference?
Sony released its WF-1000XM6 earbuds in February, but the older WF-1000XM5 remains a competitive, cheaper alternative. Each model has trade-offs depending on what buyers value most.
Sony introduced its WF-1000XM6 wireless earbuds in February, nearly three years after the WF-1000XM5 launched. The company waited until after CES to unveil the new model, timing the debut shortly before Samsung's Galaxy Buds 4 Pro reveal. Ahead of the flagship launch, Sony also released the LinkBuds Clip in January, though it hasn't introduced any new mid-range or budget earbuds in some time.
Both models carry an official retail price of $330, but current market pricing differs: the WF-1000XM6 sells for $298 while the WF-1000XM5 is available for $248.
Design and fit
The WF-1000XM6 features a completely redesigned, smaller, pill-shaped housing, while the WF-1000XM5 retains design cues from its predecessor. However, the new model again struggles with ear tip fit, echoing issues previously seen on the WF-1000XM4. The WF-1000XM5 had resolved this problem, but it appears to have returned with the M6, which can affect the effectiveness of active noise cancellation.
Sound and calls
For audio quality, the WF-1000XM6 has the edge thanks to its new QN3e audio chip, which delivers cleaner, richer sound. For calls, though, the WF-1000XM5 performs better, with microphones that suppress background noise more naturally without over-processing the voice.
Battery and features
Battery life is identical between the two models — eight hours of listening with noise cancellation on, and up to 24 hours including the charging case. The WF-1000XM6 adds extra features such as Auto Power Save mode, a Battery Care tool, a 10-band EQ, and support for Bluetooth 5.4 and LE Audio. Both models share voice commands, call-handling gestures, Adaptive Sound Control and other convenience features.
Ultimately, the choice between the two comes down to whether buyers prioritize the latest sound quality and features or a lower price.
