SpaceX has bought $329M worth of Tesla Megapacks so far this year

SpaceX has spent $329 million on Tesla Megapack battery storage systems so far this year, with $295 million of that coming in the second quarter, according to the company's earnings report released on Tuesday.

The purchases highlight the close ties between Elon Musk's various companies. Musk serves as CEO and largest shareholder of SpaceX while also running Tesla. His artificial intelligence venture xAI acquired social media platform X in 2025, and earlier this year SpaceX absorbed xAI.

The industrial-scale batteries are probably being deployed at xAI's data centers. Before the merger with SpaceX, xAI had bought $430 million worth of Megapacks for its facilities. In the first quarter of this year, that figure stood at just $34 million. SpaceX also disclosed in regulatory filings that it had acquired $131 million worth of Tesla Cybertrucks at manufacturer's suggested retail price as of December 2025.

Although xAI has relied heavily on natural gas to power its data centers — including dozens of unpermitted turbines at a Mississippi site near the Colossus data center project — large batteries remain a critical component. They can provide backup power within a second and deliver extra electricity to GPUs when needed. AI data centers don't consume power steadily; demand rises and falls depending on training and inference workloads. These peaks can lead to high charges from local utilities or strain on-site generators. Batteries help smooth those spikes, reducing costs and ensuring consistent operation.
