SpaceX Reportedly Testing Handheld AI Device, Musk Says It's 'Utterly False'

The Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX demonstrated a handheld AI device to investors, slimmer than an iPhone with a Snapdragon chip and xAI integration. Elon Musk dismissed the report as completely false on social media.

According to The Wall Street Journal, SpaceX reportedly showed investors a handheld AI device ahead of its initial public offering. The device is said to be slimmer than an iPhone and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. It runs on a proprietary operating system and integrates with xAI services, such as the AI assistant Grok.

It remains unclear what SpaceX intends to do with the device or whether it plans to sell it. One possible reason for developing its own hardware could be to avoid fees and restrictions from third-party platforms. When offering subscriptions through iOS or Android, SpaceX would have to share revenue with Apple and adhere to app store rules. This is similar to why Meta and others are pushing their own hardware.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has previously shown little enthusiasm for making a mobile device, but conditions may now be favorable. In July 2025, SpaceX partnered with T-Mobile to provide Starlink satellite access on smartphones. However, shortly after the WSJ article was published, Musk responded on X calling the report "utterly false."

It is worth noting that any new product linked to Musk should be taken with skepticism. While SpaceX is more reliable than Tesla regarding promises of personal robots and self-driving cars, this AI device could have been shown merely to excite investors rather than signal a new company direction.
