Spain Detains Nearly 300 Migrants Near Ceuta Border
Spanish authorities detained close to 300 migrants and 61 people suspected of facilitating an attempted mass border crossing near the Ceuta enclave.
Spanish security forces carried out a large-scale operation near Ceuta, Spain's enclave in North Africa bordering Morocco, arresting nearly 300 migrants who took part in an attempted mass crossing of the border.
Alongside the migrants, authorities also detained 61 people suspected of organizing or assisting the attempt, described as alleged facilitators helping migrants try to reach European territory.
Background
Ceuta, along with Spain's other North African enclave, Melilla, has long been one of the main entry points migrants use in attempts to reach European Union territory. The land borders of these territories with Morocco are the EU's only land borders on the African continent, making them a recurring site of mass crossing attempts.
The latest incident is part of an ongoing crackdown by Spanish authorities, who have been tightening border controls and targeting smuggling networks accused of organizing such large-scale attempts.
