Spain reportedly unhappy with Dombrava's letter on Ceuta crisis; PM calls for coordination

Latvia’s Interior Minister Dombrava has sent a letter to Spain over the border crisis in Ceuta. According to LTV, he wrote that the situation in Ceuta should not be treated as a standalone incident but viewed more broadly. He called for an EU-level solution, stronger external border protection, and expressed solidarity with Spain.

Dombrava said Latvia was ready to provide various forms of technical assistance within the common solidarity mechanism if needed. He also stressed that irregular migrants should not be legalised, noting that many countries have warned such moves create broader risks for Schengen security.

There has been no official reaction from Spain. However, LTV has unofficial information from trusted sources that the Spaniards are not pleased with the letter. The tone has reportedly been seen as arrogant. Behind closed doors, Spain has pointed out that while its soldiers defend Latvia, Latvia has chosen to attack Spain at a time when Spain itself is under migrant pressure.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (AS) has instructed the interior minister that, in future, content of communications with foreign countries must be coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
