A serious train accident occurred near the Spanish city of Toledo on Wednesday, drawing fire crews and helicopters to the scene. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was shocked and was in constant contact with the transport minister and the president of the Castilla-La Mancha region. He said emergency services were helping those affected and ensuring their safety, in coordination with all the administrations involved.

Sánchez expressed affection, solidarity and support for the victims and their families. He and other Spanish politicians cancelled all public engagements on Wednesday, including campaigning ahead of parliamentary elections due next month. Spain's royal family said on X that it was shocked and concerned, and offered condolences to the relatives of the deceased and to those affected.

Hospitals prepare for casualties

Spanish news agencies report that hospitals in the area have suspended planned surgeries as they receive an influx of patients from the crash. Facilities in Toledo, Ciudad Real and Alcázar de San Juan have cancelled procedures. A blood transfusion centre in Madrid appealed for urgent donations, citing a possible sudden increase in care needs.

Second major rail tragedy this year

This is the second high-speed rail tragedy in Spain this year. In January, a high-speed train derailed in southern Spain, and its rear carriages went into the path of a train operated by state-run Renfe. That crash killed 46 people. The source does not say how many people died or were injured in the Toledo accident.
