Spain and Greece decline to give Ukraine Patriot missiles nearing the end of their shelf life

According to media reports, the governments of Greece and Spain would rather keep Patriot air-defence missiles in storage than hand them to Ukraine. The missiles' service life is almost used up.

The governments of Greece and Spain prefer to keep surface-to-air missiles for Patriot systems in their warehouses rather than transfer them to Ukraine, media reports say. The service life of these missiles is nearly exhausted.

Patriot is a US-made air-defence system whose missiles are designed to intercept aerial targets. Ukraine uses such systems to defend against Russian attacks in the war that has continued since 2022.

The information comes from the Ukrainian outlet Pravda, which cites media reports. The report does not say how many missiles are involved, when exactly their shelf life will expire, or whether officials in Athens or Madrid have commented on the decision. It also does not clarify whether Ukraine has formally requested these missiles.

All that is known so far about the two countries' stance is that the missiles will stay in storage, even though they could end up in Ukraine's hands.
