Two trains collided south of Madrid, the capital of Spain, on the morning of Wednesday, 28 October. According to Spanish media, at least 10 people were killed and many others were injured. The crash has disrupted a major rail route, as traffic on the high-speed line linking Madrid with the south of the country has been suspended.

What officials said

Manuel Galán, the mayor of the town of Urda, said on the public broadcaster TVE immediately after the accident that two trains had collided and that there were casualties. The statement was cited by the international news outlet Euronews.

The railway operator ADIF also confirmed the collision. In a message on social media, it warned that services on the high-speed line from Madrid to the south of the country had been halted.

What remains unclear

The source does not say what caused the collision, what kinds of services the trains were operating or how many passengers were aboard. The exact number of casualties is also not given. Nor is it stated how long traffic on the line will remain suspended. The figure of at least 10 dead is based on Spanish media reports, so it may change once official information is released.

The suspension of the high-speed line means that train services running between the Spanish capital and the south of the country are affected.
