Experts: even old homes can become more energy efficient
In the "Climate Course" show, experts explain how households can become greener and how even older buildings can be renovated for better energy efficiency. Wind energy topics were also discussed.
The latest episode of the "Climate Course" program discussed how households can become more environmentally friendly and how both large and older buildings can be renovated to improve energy efficiency. The guests were Lāsma Līvzeniece, executive director of the Latvian Wind Energy Association, and Inguss Sauliņš, head of the residential building management department at HAGBERG.
Wind power and its resilience
The conversation also touched on wind energy — wind can be both a useful resource and a destructive force, as recently demonstrated by a storm that hit Latvia. Līvzeniece noted that wind farms are well prepared for such situations, and nothing alarming occurred at them during the storm.
Regarding the end-of-life of wind turbines, it was mentioned that a turbine no longer in use is currently being dismantled in Grobiņa. This process is said to be planned and prepared in advance for such cases. Once dismantling is complete, the site where the turbine once stood will reportedly be restored to its previous condition.
Solar panels on old buildings too
Sauliņš explained that installing solar panels is possible even on older residential buildings, provided the building is "green-minded." According to him, there are no obstacles for apartment buildings either — the key condition is residents' understanding and willingness to pursue energy efficiency. Solar panels were mentioned as one of several ways buildings can become more energy efficient.
The program was produced as part of the "Climate Course" project, financially supported by the emission allowance auctioning instrument, aimed at raising public awareness about climate neutrality and green energy in Latvia.
