A severe storm that struck Latvia on Saturday evening, described as the most destructive since January 2005, has also disrupted railway traffic. State railway operator "Pasažieru vilciens", which operates under the "Vivi" brand, published information on its website about several delayed trains.

Several routes affected

A train that departed Riga at 20:09 for Aizkraukle, originally scheduled to arrive at 21:27, was forced to stop in Ogre due to weather conditions. The company estimated the delay at around 30 minutes.

The Riga–Lielvārde train, which was due back in Riga at 20:35, has been delayed by about 40 minutes after stopping at the Ķegums station because of the weather.

The Riga–Zilupe train, scheduled to reach its final destination at 21:28, is also expected to be delayed by roughly 40 minutes.

The longest delay affected the Daugavpils–Riga train, which was supposed to arrive in the capital at 21:29 but is now running more than an hour and a half behind schedule. Several other trains experienced weather-related delays earlier in the day as well.

Storm warnings issued nationwide

Latvia's Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) had earlier forecast a storm accompanied by heavy rain across the country on Saturday evening. The agency issued orange, yellow and red warnings for strong wind and heavy rainfall in Riga and throughout Latvia. Due to the poor weather, numerous outdoor events planned across the country have been cancelled.
