Heavy Rains Forecast: Drivers Urged to Exercise Caution
From July 8 evening, Latvia expects torrential rains and thunderstorms, posing risks of aquaplaning and flooding for motorists.

According to meteorological forecasts, from 8:00 PM on July 8 until Thursday morning, heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms are expected in western and central Latvia. The precipitation amount may reach approximately one month's norm within 24 hours.
Insurance company If warns that such conditions create serious challenges for drivers. Ģirts Kubliņš, Head of Vehicle Claims at If Latvia, notes that heavy rain reduces visibility, lengthens braking distances, and increases the risk of tyre grip loss. The most dangerous situation is aquaplaning, when a layer of water forms between the tyre and the road, making the vehicle difficult or impossible to control.
Experts advise maintaining a significantly larger following distance, reducing speed, or stopping altogether. Special emphasis is placed on avoiding driving on flooded streets. Water depth is hard to assess visually and may hide potholes, damaged road surfaces, or open manholes. If water enters the engine, it can cause hydraulic lock and very costly repairs.
If has recorded a case where a summer downpour flooded an underground parking lot of an apartment building, causing irreversible damage to three cars – the compensation amounted to €130,000. Drivers are recommended to park in a garage, on higher ground, and away from trees that could fall in strong winds. Also, ensure windows are closed, as a flooded interior can lead to significant losses.
Due to climate change, the frequency of natural disasters is rising – over the past three years, If's CASCO claims for natural disasters have increased by 50%, with an average payout of €3,000.
