On August 12, Chinese studio miHoYo added a new region called Snezhnaya to its popular game Genshin Impact, describing it as a "vast, mysterious frozen world." While the developers have not officially named their inspiration, players have noted clear references to Russia, Eastern Europe, and pre-revolutionary Slavic culture.

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play action-adventure game with role-playing elements, where players explore an open fantasy world, complete quests, and assemble teams of characters. It relies on a "gacha" monetization system that lets players spend real money for a chance at rarer characters and items, though this isn't required to finish the game. Since its 2020 release, the game has become enormously popular, logging almost 240 million mobile downloads by mid-2026 and generating close to $5 billion in revenue.

The game is also highly popular in Russia, ranking fourth worldwide for mobile downloads in 2021. Unlike many Western developers, miHoYo did not withdraw from the Russian market after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.

The Russian-language trailer for Snezhnaya describes it as a country "the gods never favored," whose people believe that by standing together with their ruler in a shared "struggle," they can build a "new, better world." The localization even appears to reference a well-known meme attributed to former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev about there being "no money, but you hang in there." Players have been sharing posts noting similarities to present-day Russia, including a fuel crisis and complaints from non-player characters about high prices.

Particular attention has focused on a new character named Alyosha, whose name recalls the folk hero Alyosha Popovich, but whose storyline — investigating corruption — has led many players to see a resemblance to opposition politician Alexey Navalny. Some players reported that within their first two hours in Snezhnaya, they uncovered an official's embezzlement of natural resources and were invited to join an opposition faction.

Many users find it ironic that a Chinese company would release such content, given that China is widely viewed inside Russia as a close ally. miHoYo has otherwise treated the Russian market favorably, including a partnership with the local fast-food chain Vkusno i Tochka, and a themed Genshin Impact cafe is set to open in central Moscow on August 21.
