Tottenham Hotspur and their 29-year-old Brazilian forward Richarlison are in disagreement over how to handle the remaining nine months of his contract, with tensions rising after his intended deadline-day transfer to Everton fell through.
Background
Sources say Richarlison is weighing his options and would like to secure a release from the rest of his deal, effectively walking away from Tottenham without a transfer fee changing hands. Spurs, however, do not view that outcome as realistic and have so far resisted negotiating an early exit.
Adding further complexity, Tottenham hold a club option to extend Richarlison's contract by a further 12 months, keeping him tied to the club through the end of next season. The club has given no indication it plans to waive that option.
Ongoing talks
Representatives for both the player and the club are continuing discussions in search of a resolution, though the standoff is understood to have intensified over recent days. Since the Everton move collapsed, Richarlison has been left out of Tottenham's Premier League squad.
The proposed switch to Everton would have brought Tottenham a fee of around £35m, but the deal broke down after Richarlison could not agree personal terms with the Merseyside club.
Brazilian side Vasco da Gama are also reported to be interested in signing the forward, who is believed to be keen on a return to his home country.
